Mount Kenya 2022 - £1395
A 6-day trek to the summit of Point Lenana via the remote Chogoria route.
26th February to 5th March 2022.
Wild Edge invites you to join our adventure to the second highest peak in Africa. Mount Kenya is a spectacular extinct volcano, rising from the vast Kenyan plains. The mountain is comprised of three main summits, two of which are highly technical climbing routes. Our trek will take us to the third summit: Point Lenana (4,985m), an achievable objective for keen hill walkers with good general fitness.
We will ascend via the remote and picturesque Chogoria Route, which climbs the eastern flanks of Mount Kenya through forest and moorland. Here you may be lucky to spot some African wildlife. The route passes breathtaking mountain lakes to reach the upper rocky sections of the mountain. Our campsites have been carefully selected for their dramatic settings and include a night at Lake Michaelson (4000m), surrounded by the inspiring ‘Temple’ cliffs. Our final trek to the summit of Point Lenana will commence early in the morning, allowing us to witness the sun rise across the great African Rift Valley. We will descend via the north-western Sirimon Route.
The expedition team:
The maximum team size is 12, plus your expedition leader, English-speaking Kenyan guides, and local support staff.
Who is the trek suitable for?
This trek is suitable for those with a good level of fitness and experience of mountain walking. No prior experience trekking at altitude is required. A gradual ascent will aid our acclimatisation. While you do not need superhuman fitness to reach the summit, generally, the fitter you are at the start of the expedition, the more you will enjoy the journey. Local support staff will carry most of our kit, so you will only need to carry what you need each day in a small day-pack. On average, we will walk for 4-5 hours each day, taking breaks as needed. The summit day will be longer, with 8-9 hours of trekking required. Excellent support will be provided throughout from your expedition leader and local team.
Following your arrival at Nairobi Airport, you will be met by your driver and transferred to your hotel. Overnight in Nairobi.
After breakfast, you will meet your expedition leader and team. We will then be transferred to Mount Kenya and the start of the Chogoria Route (3.5 hours). We join our local guiding team and begin our trek through the forest. Approx 4-hours walking. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner provided (B, L, D).
Today we follow the forest trail watching for native wildlife along the way, before we arrive at Lake Elllis (3,400m). We will complete a short afternoon hike to the top of the nearby Mugi Hill (3,650m), before returning to our lakeside camp. (B, L, D).
We gradually ascend through
moorland to Lake Michaelson (4,000m), a spectacular campsite surrounded by the towering ‘Temple Cliffs’. There will be some free time for exploring this stunning area. (B, L, D).
We continue our ascent into the rocky ‘alpine zone’ of Mount Kenya, leaving behind the otherworldly plant life of the moorland trails. A final scree slope leads to Simba Tarn (4,620m), where we will camp for the night. (B, L, D).
Today we start before dawn for our final trek to the summit of Point Lenana (4,985m). This section of the route may be snow-covered. If blessed with clear skies, we can look forward to a spectacular sunrise across the African Rift Valley and may even see Kilimanjaro, located over 200 miles away. After summit photos and celebrations, we begin our descent via the Sirimon Route, reaching Old Moses’s Camp at 3,300m. (B, L, D).
We continue our descent to reach Sirimon Gate (2,650m) before bidding farewell with our local team. We will then be transferred back to Nairobi for a celebratory evening meal. Overnight in Nairobi. (B, L).
